In traditional puppetry, the content of the play is modified to accommodate the puppet type. The new puppetry asserts that the form and presentation of puppet performance is derived from the DNA of the of the production. That is, the form the puppets take are a response to the plot, the settings, the themes, the actions, the movements and interactions of the theater piece. The puppets are specific inventions created for specific theatrical pieces. Further, the physical definition of the puppets is also based on the needs of the production; touring requirements, theater space and, bluntly, dollars.
