Mock Turtle is fortunate to have the beautiful Sand Island Park as a base for our educational field trip programs. The park features nature trails, a large playground, a picnic area and, of course, the Charles S. Brown Icehouse Performing Arts Center. Over the years, Mock Turtle has used the IceHouse to provide standards-based arts and educational programs ranging from cultural diversity to narrative writing.

“Your delightful performance was thoroughly enjoyed by children and parents alike.  We appreciate all you did to make Storybook Breakfast the success it was and help us instill the love of reading in our young audience.”   –Carol Jones- Director, Lehigh Valley Literacy Center

Early Reader Field Trip

Based on our puppet play, Book, Beast and Puppet, this field trip was created just for early readers, grades K-5. The program includes a performance of the play, a puppet-making workshop, and a nature walk on the canal path. Also included is a great standards-based follow-up lesson to accompany the puppet, and free reign to use Sand Island for picnics, playground activities and environmental tours.

Making and Doing Field Trip

“Tinker, Tailor, Puppet-maker received high marks (a teacher in-service) and the comments revealed how hungry educators and for the type of program you provided.”  Allentown Art Museum

Featuring more than ten marionette puppets, puppet-maker Doug Roysdon tells the tale of his life growing up as an artist in the play, Tinker, Tailor, Puppet-maker. A blend of storytelling, puppetry and audience participation, the play is dedicated to encouraging children to use their head, heart and hands in an increasingly electronic world. As in all our elementary age field trips, the program includes puppet-making workshops, the run of Sand Island and a standards-based puppet lesson.

Time Out for Puppets Field Trip

This field trip is designed especially for community groups, camps and special events. Here we emphasize the participatory nature of our program from audience involvement in the play to nature walks on Sand Island; from puppet-making to puppet sharing activities. Perfect for picnics and playground activities, this field trip is just the thing for giving your kids a great time out.
